Last week, my boyfriend went to Texas for a wedding. After his trip, he mentioned how five days in Houston made him realize how people could easily have a structured lifestyle, when all the white noise around them is removed. In Houston, most people have their daily routine and their priorities. In New York, it is so easy to be all over the place because the city has so much to offer. For instance, we (me & him) have no defined plans, no routine, we just live our life as it comes. We work, get money and spend it on doing everything that pleases us, usually for short term satisfaction. But, why not dedicate ourselves to things that add value to our life, and make us happy on the long term. So, I came up with a list of things that I believe should be my priorities. In that sense, I will make better decisions, set better goals and overall, approach life in a more structured manner.
Family. Family first. Without them, I wouldn't be here. Family are the people who raised me, the people who will always open up their arms, if all else fails. What would make me happy is to see them happy. Giving back to them, tell them how much I love them, get them flours while they can still smell them, make them proud and stand strong for them.
My boyfriend. I am lucky I found LOVE. It sounds so strange to say such a thing in a city like New York. So, I want to keep it growing. In order to do so, I am aware that I need to make my partner a priority. After my family, I believe he is the one that will be there for me. The one who understands me the most, and who knows all my flaws but still loves me and stand by me. The one with whom I want to spend the rest of my life and have a family.
Spirituality: I believe in God. But over the years, I have left prayers aside and lived my life by giving thanks here and there. I think spiritually shapes one's life. I need to grow my faith back and not only talk to God when something major is happening or when I am on the low. Instead, I should be talking to him everyday.
Healthy living. Healthy living is good for the overall body. heart, soul, and brain. It is definitely something I have decided to put my heart on: eating healthier, getting adequate sleep, relax when needed, travel, detox, etc.
Career. Though I haven't landed a job yet, I believe that focusing on my career should be a priority because my career will be what will help me make a living. So it is important to take it seriously give my all and not take it for granted. Work hard, play harder.
Valuable social activities. it's funny how when you get caught up by certain things, you give it a reason. For instance, I found it perfectly normal going out to night club every single nights and binge drink. Thank God I no longer do this. Now I believe what will be more purposeful would be to find activities that bring value to my life. For example, I think joining some meet up groups of my interest will make sense. And don't get me wrong, dancing once in a while still fits the bill.
Friends who add value to my life. I used to have a lot of friends and thought I was so cool. But, when I stopped going out clubbing and doing certain things, I realized that I could count on no one when I needed them the most. It made me realize that one criteria of making new friends would be to choose people who add value to my life. Not the kind of friends who are only there for you under certain conditions, but the kind of friends who are always present, who accepts the whole package and shows you what unconditional love is. Quality over quantity anytime now.
Physical appearance. I've long had this issue of self-confidence. The worst part is that I don't do anything about it and I keep on complaining. But in order to be happy change needs to happen. I need to take better care of the way I look. But beyond this, just like a blogger once put it so well 'I will learn to love myself. Unconditionally. Totally. Constantly. Restlessly. All in due time, even if it kills me.
Increase my knowledge. Like the old saying says 'knowledge is power'. I've realized that knowledge is not only at school. Knowledge could be found in movies, documentaries, books, meeting new people, different culture, etc.
Work on my business ideas. Coming from a family of entrepreneur, I always have ideas running up in my mind. New business ventures here and there. But now, I need to pick one and focus on it. Turn it into reality. Watch me!
Saving money. It is so easy being caught up spending money without thinking in the city. Because oh well, this is how it is period. But by now knowing what are my priorities, I believe that being able to save money and keep good credit will help me in a long term - investments, mortgage, unplanned events, self sustainability, etc.
Until next time,
Cécile
